Studies of Modification of a-Zirconium Phosphate to Thermoplastic Starch

The alpha-Zirconium Phosphate modified thermoplastic starch (a-ZrP/TPS) plastics were prepared by extrusion and injection molding.

The effects of different content of a-ZrP on mechanical, impact, water resistance and torque rheological propeties of a-ZrP/TPS were studied. The results indicat that the maximum values of tensile strength reached 4.5 MPa at 0.2% a-ZrP addition compared with 1.94 MPa of the unmodified TPS. In the meantime, the elongation at break decreases while the impact strength increases from 50.4kJ/m² to 55.32kJ/m², the contact angle is enhanced from 46.34° to 70.46°, which proves that the water resistnace is apparently improved, the torque rheological curves show that the peak torque of a-ZrP/TPS increases obviously compared with TPS, not favorable for processability.
