Preparation and Properties of Polylactic Acid/Zirconium Phosphate Melt-Spun Fibers

The polylactic acid (PLA) slice and  zirconium phosphate particles were mixed to prepare PLA masterbatch containing 20% mass fraction zirconium phosphate by twin screw extruder.

The masterbatch and pure PLA slice mixed at a different proportion were blended and melt spun to obtain different PLA/zirconium phosphate blend fibers.
The preparation of these blend fibers were discussed.
The external morphology of the fiber bundles was observed by scanning electron microscope.
The mechanical and antibacterial properties of these fibers were tested.

The results indicate that  zirconium phosphate particles are dispersed evenly in the blend PLA,though few particles aggregation appears.

With the increase of the content of zirconium phosphate, the fracture strength of the fiber increases first and then decreases. When the content of zirconium phosphate is 1.5% by mass fraction, the maximum breaking strength of the fiber is 0.85 cN/dtex,and the antibacterial rate of the Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus reaches 99.9%.
